Theirs is a two-way relationship though, and this scene really highlighted Caleb’s side of it. But it’s always been a very important foundation of their friendship, and one that I think gets glossed over sometimes in favor of focusing on the protection and support Nott provides for Caleb. And certainly Caleb isn’t the only one who respects her or takes her seriously.
Now, Nott often purposefully puts on a facade of incompetence or a mask of silly frivolousness almost like a shield, so I’m not trying to say other characters don’t have a reason for defaulting to that kind of reaction when interacting with her. He’s one of the very few characters who doesn’t side-eye, patronize, or underestimate her. He knows she’s smart he takes her seriously he asks for her help. And while the 17 Caleb rolled wasn’t much higher than he’s rolled before when working on this spell alone, Matt rewarded the RP by having him make significant headway because of Nott’s assistance and new perspective.Īnd the teamwork in that scene really highlights what has always been one of the most important parts of their relationship: Caleb respects Nott. Even though Caleb rolled higher on Arcana, Matt highlighted Nott’s intelligence and important contributions to the work. I loved how Matt leaned into that hard, and really encouraged it as the DM. It also continues Caleb’s trend of trying to reassure and provide comfort through actions - he showed her the notes and walked her through the potential of the spell when she was freaked out after dying in the Happy Fun Ball too. This was great character work for the narrative because it means that Nott is now participating directly in the part of the narrative that’s working toward her end goals. The most significant part of that scene in an RP-sense for me was Liam’s decision to have Caleb invite Nott to help him work on Halas’s spell.
